Use formatted text as a participant instruction in Innovate
Use a formatted text card as a participant instruction when participants need to read background information, instructions, or other important content before responding.
A formatted text card can be displayed directly in the participant area of an Innovate activity.
This allows participants to access relevant information before writing or submitting their contributions.
When should I use a participant instruction?
Use a participant instruction when you want to:
- Introduce the question
- Provide background information
- Explain how participants should respond
- Link to a document
- Display images or videos
- Explain how the responses will be used
Create a formatted text card
- Open the Innovate activity
- Select Add card
- Select Formatted text
- Add a heading and content
- Save the card
Display the card as a participant instruction
- Select the gear icon on the card
- Open the card’s visibility settings
- Choose to display the card as a Participant instruction
- Confirm that the card is visible to participants
- Save your changes
Add a document for participants
If participants should read a document before answering, add a link to the document in the formatted text card.
Use clear link text, such as:
- Read the procedure before responding
- Open the background document
- Review the instructions
Also explain which parts of the document participants should focus on.
Example of a participant instruction
Before responding, please read the attached procedure. Consider how the procedure works in daily practice, which parts are clear, and which areas may need to be improved.
Preview the participant experience
Open the participant view and confirm that:
- The text appears before the participant responds
- The document link works
- The instruction is easy to understand
- The document opens on both desktop and mobile devices
- It is clear how the participant should continue to the question
Tip
Keep the instruction itself concise, even if the linked document is extensive. Explain what participants should look for and how the information should be reflected in their responses.
