# Instruction steps in Flow

## Use an instruction step to give participants information, context, or guidance as they move through the flow.

The **Instruction** step presents information for participants to read. Participants do not need to submit a contribution or provide an answer in this step.

An instruction step can be placed at the beginning of the flow or used as a transition between different stages.

### When should I use an instruction step?

Use an Instruction step when you want to:

- Introduce the purpose of the activity
- Explain what participants should do
- Provide important background information
- Prepare participants for the next stage
- Create a clear transition within the flow

### Enter the step title

The title should clearly communicate what the information is about.

Examples:

- Before you begin
- How the next step works
- Now it is time to rate the ideas
- Thank you for your contributions

### Write the instruction text

Use the **Instruction text** field to enter the information participants should read.

Keep the text short and focused whenever possible. If you need to provide extensive information, consider dividing it into several instruction steps.

### Example instruction

> *In the next step, you will read and rate suggestions submitted by other participants. Rate each suggestion based on the value it could create.*

**Tip:**  
Place the instruction as close as possible to the step it explains. This means participants do not need to remember information from an earlier part of the flow.
